1. Our Commitment to Accessibility

Macon County, Missouri is committed to ensuring that all residents, visitors, and members of the public can access the information and services available on our website, https://www.maconcountymo.com , regardless of ability or the assistive technology they use.

We are actively working to conform with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA — the internationally recognized standard for web accessibility. This updated Accessibility Statement reflects the completion of both the automated and manual phases of our professional accessibility audit, conducted by 54 Design Group, LLC. It supersedes our initial statement published on June 9, 2026.

Manual accessibility testing — including keyboard navigation and screen reader testing — was completed on June 9, 2026. No new issues requiring remediation were identified during manual testing. The remaining open items described in this statement relate to automated findings and third-party platform limitations that are actively being addressed.

2. Audit Overview

Our website underwent a two-phase professional accessibility audit in June 2026. All pages on the site were included in both phases.

Phase 1 — Automated Scanning (June 3, 2026)

All pages were scanned using Axe DevTools Pro and Screaming Frog automated accessibility tools. The majority of pages were found to be free of violations. Pages with identified issues received a detailed per-page examination and a follow-up verification rescan on June 9, 2026. One page — Contact Macon County — had issues that were fully resolved and confirmed clean during the rescan.

Phase 2 — Manual Testing (June 7 – June 9, 2026)

Manual accessibility testing was performed across all pages using a standard keyboard and NVDA screen reader on Windows, following the essential tasks recommended by WCAG 2.1. Testing assessed keyboard navigation, focus order and visibility, screen reader announcements, link and button labeling, form interactions, and skip navigation functionality.

No new issues requiring remediation were found during manual testing. All pages navigated correctly by keyboard. Screen reader announcements were accurate and meaningful throughout the site, with the exception of the known platform limitations already documented in Section 4 of this statement, which are attributed to Duda and MapBox and are outside Macon County's direct control.

3. Current Accessibility Status

The following summarizes the current status of all identified accessibility issues across both audit phases.

Issues resolved

The Contact Macon County page had issues identified during the automated audit that were corrected and confirmed fully resolved through a follow-up scan. No further action is needed on that page.

Manual testing across all pages returned no new findings. No remediation actions were identified as a result of the manual testing phase.

Issues we are actively fixing

The following issues were identified during the automated audit and are being corrected by Macon County. Neither requires a developer — both can be addressed directly in the Duda website editor. Target completion date: July 3, 2026.

Color contrast on the Recorder of Deeds page. A highlighted box on this page displays white text on a purple background. The contrast between the text and background is too low, making the text difficult or impossible to read for users with low vision, color blindness, or anyone viewing the page in bright conditions. We are updating the colors to meet the required 4.5:1 contrast standard.

Image descriptions (alt text) on five department pages. Several pages include images that convey meaningful information — including an eligibility infographic, a staff photo with a name overlay, and a labeled map screenshot — without adequate text descriptions for screen reader users. We are reviewing and updating alternative text for images on the County Assessor, GIS/Mapping, County Clerk, Recorder of Deeds, and Road and Bridge pages.

Issues being addressed by our platform and third-party vendors

Some issues identified during the automated audit are caused by the underlying Duda website platform or by third-party services embedded in our site. These cannot be corrected by Macon County through normal website editing. We have documented and reported these issues to the appropriate vendors. Both vendors have been contacted and responses are pending.

Duda platform (response pending). Several pages have accessibility issues generated by Duda's native widgets, including the Photo Gallery widget on the Circuit Court and Visitor Information pages, an Accordion widget on the Rental and Camping Rate Information page, and how Duda structures mobile and desktop content on the Recorder of Deeds page. These are platform-level issues that require a fix from Duda. We are monitoring Duda platform updates and will update this statement when resolved.

MapBox embedded map (response pending). The Circuit Court and Probate Court pages include an interactive map powered by MapBox. The map's view-toggle button has no accessible label, meaning screen reader users cannot identify what the button does. This cannot be corrected by Macon County or Duda independently. We have submitted this issue to MapBox for resolution and will update this statement when a fix is confirmed.
