Duties of the Commission 

• Oversee all aspects of county government. 
• To the extent that the Missouri statutes allow, the commission sets policies for the county. 
• Approves the budgets of all the offices in the county, as well as the Common Road and Bridge Fund and Road and Bridge Capital Improvement Fund. 
• Sets the levies for the general revenue fund and the Common Road and Bridge Fund. 
• The maintenance and repair of the county's roads and bridges is the responsibility of the commission to oversee.

When is the Commission in session? 

The Commission is in session every Monday and Thursday from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM unless it's a holiday when the courthouse would be closed. 

What is Macon County's Fencing Law? 

In April 1986, the voters of Macon County voted to adopt the Local Option Fence Law, wherein if there is a need for a fence by either of two adjoining landowners, both shall be obligated to build and maintain the fence. What is the process to convert a dirt road to gravel? 

The commission requires the public to supply the first application of gravel, 350 tons per mile. Some time later, at the public's request, the road and bridge department will apply another 350 tons per mile. After this is completed, the road will be added to the road and bridge inventory to receive regular maintenance. 

What is the width of a county road right-of-way? 

Most county road right-of-way is 60 ft. There are exceptions to this, so if in doubt, please check with the County Commission or the County Assessor's office. 

Does Macon County have laws against "mudding" on dirt roads? 

Yes. The Macon County Commission, per Mo. Revised Statutes 49.490, has issued an order stating that any person who shall knowingly remove, tear up, or otherwise destroy or damage any bridge, culvert, ditch, sidewalk, road embankment, dirt, gravel, pavement, crosswalk, stepping stones, or traffic signs in or upon any road, street, avenue, thoroughfare, or alley within the county road right-of-way without having lawful authority to do so shall be deemed to have damaged the property of the county and will be prosecuted accordingly. Who maintains county road signs? 

The Macon County Enhanced 911 Board has chosen not to continue to share the responsibility of maintenance of road signs. Please contact the Macon County Road & Bridge Department at (660) 239-4255 about missing or damaged signs.
