The county collector is the elected official responsible for collecting and distributing current and delinquent taxes for various taxing entities. Currently, Macon County has 37 different political subdivisions that have authorized tax levies. County merchant licenses and Railroad and Utilities taxes are also collected in the Collector's Office.
Tax Statements are mailed each year in late October. The failure of the taxpayer to receive the tax bill does
not relieve the taxpayer of any tax liability imposed by law. Tax payments must be in our office by December 31 or earlier.
If mailed, they must be postmarked by December 31st. Please check with your local post office for their deadline for obtaining a postmark.
All tax payments received after December 31st will incur a penalty on all taxes.
What kind of tax is collected at the County Collector's office?
The Collector is responsible for collecting two different kinds of taxes: Personal Property Tax and Real Estate Tax.
Personal Property Tax:
Taxable items include licensed motorized vehicles, boats, boat motors, trailers, mobile homes, livestock, farm machinery, and other similar items. You MUST show a paid personal tax receipt before the license bureau will allow you to license or re-license a vehicle anywhere in the state of Missouri.
Real Estate Tax:
This includes land and all permanently attached improvements.
How do I know if I owe either of these two taxes?
Personal Property Tax:
If you live in Macon County on January 1st and own taxable personal property, then you will owe tax for that year. The tax payment is due by December 31st without incurring any penalty. The same procedure applies each year as long as you are a Missouri resident.
Real Estate Tax: If you purchase real estate in Macon County at any time during the year, you will owe real estate tax for the year. The tax payment is due by December 31st.
What generates a tax bill as a reminder for me to pay?
Personal Property Tax:
YOU must report what taxable personal property you own DIRECTLY to the Macon County Assessor no later than March 1st yearly (State Law). The assessment sheet you complete generates the tax bill, which is mailed to the address you report on the form!
Real Estate Tax:
The recording of your deed will automatically generate a tax bill. However, when ownership changes occur after September 1st, the tax bill for the first year could be printed and mailed to the previous owner. If this happens, it is YOUR responsibility to obtain the tax bill information. The Collector's office will be happy to assist you if they are made aware of the misdirected bill.
Please phone our office at 660-385-3214 if you have further questions.
